My main research activity experienced in studying biological effects of nanoparticles to mammalian cells, with a focus on studying cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, neurotoxicity and phospholipidosis (excessive intracellular accumulation of phospholipids). I study the effects of nanoparticles to different cellular prosecces (lipid metabolism, biogenesis of pulmonary surfactants…)
My experience with evaluating biological effects of nanoparticles include the following methods:
- Cell culturing
- Light and fluorescence microscopy
- Spectrophotometry and spectrofluorometry
- Flow cytometry
- Cytotoxicity testing (MTT assay, Neutral red uptake assay, ATP luciferase assay, measurement of Reactive Oxygen Species – ROS, differential staining methods…)
- Genotoxicity testing (Comet assay, Micronucleus assay)
- Biochemical methods for the measurement of stress-related enzymes activity (catalase, glutathione S-transferase…)
- Proteomic approaches (SDS-PAGE, 2D-PAGE, western blotting)
- Biological characterization of nanoparticles
I graduated in Biotechnology (September, 2012) from Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia.
The title of the thesis is: The adaptation of comet assay with yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and isopod Porcellio scaber for testing genotoxicity of nanoparticles.
In October, 2012 I started the interdisciplinary doctoral study Bioscience, research area Nanosciences, coordinated by the Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana.
